Windows 10 End of Life Management

Windows 10 End of Life Management

  1. Windows 10 End of Support (October 14, 2025): It’s crucial to start preparing now, as the end of support means no more security updates or patches, which could make your system vulnerable to malware or other exploits. Moving to Windows 11 or upgrading hardware will be necessary to keep your system secure.

  2. Windows 11 System Requirements: The PC Health Check tool is helpful, but it's also good to keep in mind that Windows 11 has stricter requirements, such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and compatible CPUs. Even if your PC meets all requirements, some features might still be unavailable depending on your hardware configuration.

  3. In-place Upgrade: When upgrading to Windows 11, the in-place upgrade process should generally keep your personal files and applications intact, but it’s still wise to back up everything beforehand. Important items like email, documents, photos, and license keys should be backed up to ensure a smooth transition.

  4. Obsolete Hardware and Upgrading: If your current hardware doesn't meet Windows 11’s system requirements, consider upgrading your PC/Laptop or purchasing a new one. When purchasing new hardware, ensure that it comes with Windows 11 or at least offers compatibility for an upgrade.

  5. Backup Options: Aside from OneDrive, there are plenty of cloud storage services (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and physical storage solutions (external hard drives, SSDs, USB drives) that can ensure your data is safe during this transition.

  6. Factory Reset and Secure Wipe: If you're planning to sell or donate your old machine, doing a factory reset is essential to erase personal data. Using the "reset with secure wipe" option or employing third-party data-wiping tools can ensure that sensitive data can't be recovered.

  7. Disposal: For environmentally responsible disposal, e-waste recycling is the best route. Most electronics stores or recycling centers offer secure disposal of computers, which includes data destruction and proper recycling of components.

Preparing now will give you plenty of time to evaluate options and make a smooth transition to either new hardware or a Windows 11 upgrade.
